Who Were They?

Lost and forgotten photos from the past

You may have read that our wonderful site regular Intense Guy (aka Iggy) had tracked down the grandchildren of beautiful Irene Monroe, pictured below. Click here to visit the original family reunion post I ran back in January 2011.

At the time it didn’t make much of an impression on me that I only had photos of Irene, her mother and her brother. As Iggy discovered, Irene was married to Fredrick H. Monroe. Well, while I was sorting though my photos the other day, I found this:

Darn my filing system that got messed up, but I’m so happy I found this. There were two copies of the photo, one damaged on the corners. I’ve been in touch with Irene’s family and they are excited to be receiving these newly discovered photos of Irene’s husband.

Clearly, I need a better filing system! Ha ha Yes, I try to sort them into categories, such as Men / Facial Hair / Workers, or Women / 1860s / 1890s / jewelry / hair. Right now they are just in one of those photo boxes from the stationery store, with notecards and flags to separate the categories. Larger photos go in a big plastic file box.

However, I talked to a friend of mine recently and I am looking into a better storage system that won’t damage the photos. It’s a preservation system really. The boxes for smaller photos would be similar to the “shoebox” concept, and then there’s a large accordion file for the larger photos which is 12×12. Email me if you want more info. I suppose at some point I’ll have to sell some of these but as long as my husband doesn’t realize how large my collection is, I’m golden, ha ha. I just acquired a fabulous antique cabinet card stand photo album too!

Hi! I am Frederick Monroe’s (9/18/1900 to 10/08/1987) grandson. My sister found this site recently while researching our family tree. She has quite a bit of information including letters from Irene Shoemaker. If the page is still being monitored, we can probably fill in lots of gaps.
