I giggle a little every time I look at this cabinet card, because the couple looks so stiff and uncomfortable, like it’s the first time they ever met. But noting that they both are wearing a flower corsage, I really suspect this is their wedding photo. Maybe an arranged marriage? Oh my.
The photographer was Van Drimmelen of Sioux Center, IA and I will date this to the 1890s. The photograph has that “look” of the collodion process as well, suggesting it was made after 1894. It’s in the sharp colors and contrast, plus a bit of a blue tint to the mount.
The 1900 United States Census lists Robert J Van Drimmelen (b. Aug-1870 in the Netherlands) and newly married to Susie B. (b. Sep-1881 in Iowa of parents from the Netherlands) as having the occupation of Photographer. They are shown as living in Orange City, Sioux County, Iowa.
Orange City and Sioux Center are neighboring towns.
Robert needed to put this couple more at ease! They look a little too old to be going to a prom… :)

Her dress is beautiful. I would think it should be her hand in his rather than his hand in hers. Oh, well… Still a beautiful pic if somewhat stiff as mentioned.

Oh my. A handshake wedding. That’s a keeper!
“You may now shake the hand of the bride.” Not a dry eye was seen within those attending. It wasn’t tears of joy. Nobody could stop laughing.

Most certainly a wedding..perhaps she was feeling faint from all the excitement and she grabbed his hand to steady herself. Those arranged marriages sometimes worked out really well:)
