Who Were They?

Lost and forgotten photos from the past

Here we have our fourth AZO postcard from the Benedicta Trunk album, and the third with the same backdrop. This one looks a bit off center, and the two gentlemen look harried and a little rumpled, don’t you think? The fellow on the right looks a bit to me like Oliver Hardy if he was thin. Maybe I’m just tired from a long weekend, ha ha.

This is the third of four AZO postcards from the Benedicta Trunk album. This backdrop looks the same as the one of the lady with the flowers. It appears they used this venue as their photography studio and got postcards as prints. I wonder if their cost was better than standard prints that were available during that period, 1904-1918. These kids are really cute. I love the big bow in the girl’s hair.

Today we have an AZO postcard from the Benedicta Trunk album. I don’t know who this lady is. She could be one of the Trunk sisters, a friend or a relative. The flowers in this picture look pretty sad, don’t you think?

This is a real photo postcard from the Benedicta Trunk photo album. A real photo postcard is one that used the standard photographic development process in a darkroom to print the postcard images. This particular one is an AZO postcard, which means it was printed on Kodak Professional AZO paper. The stamp box (where the stamp would go on the other side) can help us date the postcard. This one has four triangles (one in each corner) all pointing up, which was the type of stamp box used between 1904-1918.

I can’t help but notice the irony of this couple’s facial expressions against the photo prop. Bad date?

I have been contacted by Phoebe Monroe, one of Irene Shoemaker Monroe‘s grand children, and also by a great grandchild, who are excited to be reunited with the photos of Irene, her brother and her mother. Phoebe told me that they don’t know much about this side of their family, so it’s a special pleasure to reunite these photos with relatives. There are comments from family members on both posts linked above.
