Girls in front of the fireplace

These little Klein girls just don’t seem to age, do they? Here are Kathy & Karen Klein, in front of the fireplace, holding a picture of Santa Claus. They are cozy in their footsie pajamas and laughing at something. The card features a scrolly script that says Merry Christmas, and a photographer dressed as Santa Claus. The card is signed Fred, Isobel, Kathy & Karen.

W. L. Philpott

Mailed to Mr W. L. Philpott

A smiling Santa Claus climbs the chimney in this vintage postal card. His suit is trimmed with white fur, his beard is bushy and his sack is full of toys. The chimney of red brick has snow around it.

The card was mailed but the postmark is not clear, so beyond 19xx I can’t tell you an exact year. I suspect it was in the 1900s however, because another card was mailed to the same family during that same time frame.

This one was addressed to Mr W. L. Philpott of Englewood TN, on Route 3. The note reads:

“Hello Grandpa”

I hope “Santa” will treat you kindly this Christmas. Hope you will have a good time. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, from Mabel D.

Pretty Madonna

This vintage post card is an example of the art deco styles that were popular in the early 20th century. It features a Madonna and child plus an additional angel, surrounded by holly and scroll work. The card was beautifully embossed and gilded. The card was not mailed. No manufacturer name is present, but the card was printed in Germany. The stamp box indicates in English “Domestic One Cent / Foreign Two Cents” suggesting it was intended for the American market.

Growing up and a different dog

Here’s the last card I have from the Gus and Abby Klein family, showing Augie, Susan and Frankie, and now with Bonnie who looks to be a wirehaired or Aerdale terrier. The photo is in color and slides The back of the card has a nice note.

As usual, this was the “best” of 20 pictures brother John took over Thanksgiving weekend – John & Linda were up with the new baby – she is precious & charming & we all wish they could move up here so we could watch her grow up.

Lots of love,

Abby & Gus
