Who Were They?

Lost and forgotten photos from the past

The couple in this photo seem so very proper to me. The woman has a scarf of some kind covering her hair and I’d guess she is holding a Bible or prayer book in her lap. The man looks like a sea captain or former military man to me, with the long double breasted coat and whiskers. The photo is very damaged, the original being about 8×10.

The thing that is so odd about this photo is the back of it:

Although time and wear have damaged the image, this was definitely a photograph mounted on the cardstock. Do you think this might be our proper sea captain in his younger days?

This lovely image brings to mind a mother, thinking of her family while they are off at their pursuits; children and a husband who keep her busy. She is the very picture of peaceful reflection while she adjusts the roses in that vase. Her dress is lovely, a sheer over dress with lots of beading on the bodice front. I’d put this photo in the 1930s. The original image is approximately 7×9.

Today’s offering is a cabinet card made by Smith (probably C. R. Smith based on the monogram). The ornate wicker is much like that I’ve seen in photos from the 1890s. This girl is definitely her daddy’s best girl! First off, she has a fancy dress in the sailor style, curled hair, and you can tell in her expression. It’s lucky to find a great expression like that on a vintage cabinet card! Secondly, she is being photographed with her father. I have seen lots of photos of boys and their fathers, but not many like this one.

This photo reminds me of the old nursery rhyme Bye Baby Bunting because the baby is so completely covered from head to toe with bonnet, coat, mittens and shoes. She’s a pretty girl! The photo is from the 20th century, I’d guess between 1910-1930.

Folks I apologize for the brief detour from the photos but this is an historic moment in our country and for the world. Our President has announced that Osama Bin Laden is dead and his evil is gone from the world. Thank you to our awesome military for every sacrifice to make the world safer. I know I should not rejoice in death but my eyes are filled with tears of joy for his death and tears of gratitude for all those who made this happen.
