Who Were They?

Lost and forgotten photos from the past

I would say that two weeks of horse pictures is just about enough (but you know I have got more!). We will close this out for now with this snapshot of a couple on a horse. The woman is wearing a cloche hat and has pretty legs showing. I can only imagine her opinion of getting on horseback for her photo. The dude looks like he is very comfortable on the horse and perhaps it is his horse for work. You can see the spurs on his boots and leather vest. The buildings in the background look like Craftsman style homes. The sidewalk is paved but the road is not.

Today’s snapshot of three kids on a horse was taken somewhere in the desert. You can tell by the scrub brush in the background. The kids are stair steps, with the big brother in back, middle sister in the middle, and younger sister in front. Big brother has his arm around both of them, keeping them safe. There’s a barbed-wire fence between the kids and the photographer. It might be the juxtaposition of the small girl on the horse, but the horse looks big to me. On enlarging the image, there is *something* behind the horse and I wonder if it is mom or dad.

Written in pencil, very faint to the eye, is 8/38, which I am taking as the date this photo was taken. It features a small boy on a small pony with a full sized adult holding the reins. The adult has on a flat crowned hat, bandanna tied ’round her neck, and dungarees. The little guy also has a bandanna around his neck. The building in the background has a tile roof and what looks like adobe walls. There appear to be at least two identical buildings, leading me to wonder if this was a dude ranch or camp of some sort. I have no explanation for the odd trim job on the upper left corner.

Today’s horse photo features a lady in a skirt on horseback. I can’t decide exactly how the skirt is hiked up, but it must be so she could ride astride. There is part of another horse to the left of frame and the elbow of another person to the right of frame.

This is a scan of a slide made on Kodak film in the 1960s. This is my dad! I can’t say that he enjoyed horseback riding because in my entire life I never heard him once mention it. This photo was taken at the old family farm, the one I mentioned recently where he learned to drive the tractor when he was 8 years old. :-) One thing I love about these old slides is the deep and rich colors.
