Who Were They?

Well hello there! Up for perusal today is a cabinet card showing a round-faced lady with a serious expression. The photo was made in Salem, MA at the Locke Co Studio. Or, really, it was made by Gray & Hazelton, the successors to the Locke Co Studio. They clearly were using up stock and had the new name printed onto the cards. I found one other reference to this studio dated to the early 1890s. I wasn’t able to find a specific link to the Locke Co Studio, but there are many references to an Amos H Locke in Massachusetts from 1872-1881 in the towns of Athol Depot, Clinton and Plymouth. These three towns range from 60-80 miles away from Salem.

The address of 256 Essex St is a modest red brick building, two-story, with white trim. It’s a few blocks off the North River and rather close walking to the Salem Witch Museum, the Salem Witch House, and a variety of similarly named locations.
