Yesterday’s CdV of one of four possible women was directly next to today’s photo of either Andrew Hedlund or Carl Johan Sjoman. I spoke to a friend of mine who’s last name also has that Sj- in the beginning. The Sj in Norwegian is pronounced as a “Sh” sound. So the couple might be from Norway before making their way to the J. W. Upham gallery in Jamestown NY.

Anna Maria Sjoman (b. abt 1839 in Sweden) lived in Eglon, Clay, Minnesota and died there on 22 May 1929. Her husband’s name was Carl Johan. (b. abt 1842).
And a Martha Erickson married to an Andrew Hedlund living in Cuba, Becker county, Minnesota. Husband Andrew Swenson Hedlund was born 1847 and died on 27 Oct 1919.
Anna Maria and Carl are buried in Eksjo Lutheran Church Cemetery, Lake Park, Becker County, Minnesota USA.
So who is it? :-)
–Martha Erickson (1861 – 1887)
Born in Sillerud, Varmland, Sweden on 1861. Martha married Andrew Hedlund and had 7 children. She passed away on 1887.
–Andrew Hedlund (1847 – 1919)
Born in Langserud, Varmland, Sweden on 1847. Andrew married Martha Erickson and had 7 children. Andrew married Alma Hedlund and had 3 children. Andrew married Anna Kajsa Hedlund and had 7 children. He passed away on 1919.
Andrew (Anders) Hedlund and Martha Erickson were my great-great grandparents and the picture posted is not Andrew Hedlund. After Martha died, Andrew married Anna Kajsa (I’m uncertain if Kajsa was a middle name or her last name) and Anna bore 5 more children, 2 of whom died in infancy and the three remaining sons passed in their twenties. (My records show six children for the union between Andrew and Martha).
How cool to trip onto your site!
–Carl Johan Sjoman (1841 – 1908)
Carl Johan Sjoman was born 06 Sep 1841 in Tidje, Dalsland, Sweden, and died 07 Aug 1908 in Fargo, MN. He married Anna Marie Erikson, daughter of Erik Olsson and Marie Catharina Andersdotter.
Children of Carl Johan Sjoman and Anna Marie Erikson are:
+Selma Marie Sjoman, b. 20 Mar 1882, St. Paul, MN, d. 23 Jun 1963, St. Paul, MN.
Anna Maria was an Erickson!!!
Ugh with the Swedish names…..
I have a friend that lives in the Hawley /Lake Park are..perhaps she will know some people by the last name of Hedlund..possibly by eliminating someone we can head in the right direction too find relatives:)
This is Carl Johan Sjoman
The photo is not him, though there are some similar characteristics of the Sjoman family that your photo does have. Carl Johan Sjoman was an Eriksson before coming to America from Tide Parish Sweden, so technically he was an Eriksson and changed his name to Sjoman after immigrating as many people of Swedish Decent did back then. Carl Johan Eriksson Sjoman is my 2nd great grandfather who built the farmhouse in Hawley, Eglon township, Becker County, MN that the next two generations of my family lived in including my mother for a short time. This is not him, though I wouldn’t doubt that it is closely related with the shape of that face and the facial features.
