Who Were They?

Lost and forgotten photos from the past

I’m leaving this photo a little large because it is difficult to figure out exactly what is going on here. There is a man lowered down into the ravine or spillway and he is doing…something…while a variety of other men look on from the safety of the bridge. I think the large pipe is an irrigation or drainage pipe, maybe one that diverts water from the roadway? The bridge doesn’t appear to cross that culvert, but instead travels over it lengthwise. It’s a mystery.

This snapshot shows three painters standing in front of a brick building. Perhaps they were painting the inside rooms. On the back was written “the painters” which makes me wonder if there were other tradesmen photographed for whatever project was taking place.

For this week’s Sepia Saturday, we are prompted with a roadside stand, advertising fish and selling produce of all types, taken in 1936 by Walker Evans. I knew when I saw the photo that it might be difficult for me to meet the theme because I could only think off hand of one photo of a roadside battery store, which I used previously. But, as I looked through my stash, I discovered, much to my delight, Cece and Al. The photo above is Cece and Al in Bear Valley, Idaho. In July 1923 they caught a whopper of a fish, a 40 lb salmon if the notation is to be believed.

When I was a kid, we always went fishing with my dad. We went for trout, which can get quite large but we were catching 8 – 10 inch rainbows and brown trout. Well, one particular trip, my mother came along and was reading a book on a blanket while my dad, sister and I caught fish for dinner. I hadn’t done very well as I recall and soon my dad called me over. He asked me if I could make the #2 with my fingers. Curious, I showed him my grubby little fingers in the V formation. He proceeded to give me two fish, one for each finger (up to the knuckle in the gills!) and said “go take these to your mother.”

Today’s photo shows us a girl in the yard with her dog, sheets and overall on the line behind her. The clothesline appears to have been strung from the corner of the outbuilding along to somewhere out of frame. In the shade you can see someone – I’m guessing her brother – sitting in a chair and there is an Adirondak style chair next to him. The photographer’s shadow is in the lower front of frame. This is a great photo of a normal day in the backyard.

This gives new meaning to the kids in the “way back” doesn’t it? This photo is of a family, the adults standing and two kids in a wagon or cart of some kind. Today is Thanksgiving here in America, which is usually celebrated with family, lots of food, and football on the TV. It will be no different in my home I suppose; I have a 20 pound turkey for 7 people! The scenery in this photo makes me think of cold autumn breezes, which is why I chose this for today. I hope you all have a wonderful day, where ever you may be in the world. Take a moment to be thankful for the blessings you have received.
