Who Were They?

Lost and forgotten photos from the past

I’m leaving this photo a little large because it is difficult to figure out exactly what is going on here. There is a man lowered down into the ravine or spillway and he is doing…something…while a variety of other men look on from the safety of the bridge. I think the large pipe is an irrigation or drainage pipe, maybe one that diverts water from the roadway? The bridge doesn’t appear to cross that culvert, but instead travels over it lengthwise. It’s a mystery.

I fully agree, that is one hard to figure out photo! The guy “down in the hole” seems to be attaching broken pavement to a wire so it can be lifted up and out.

I’m thinking they are demolishing at least part of the roadway – but can’t see why.

What a mystery. It leaves you open to possibilities as to why the road is missing. Earthquake, river wash out, flood, just endless possibilities. It looks like it is from the 1930s so maybe some kind of public works project. Hummm…

it is a little hard to see, but is he standing on top of a car that has gone over the side?
