Would you say this older gentleman is austere or cranky? I get a feeling of fatigue and age from his face, but at the same time I also sense that he was a man in charge. He must have been the patriarch of his family and hopefully he had many children and grandchildren to carry on his name. Note how he holds his hands in his lap, not closed, not quite relaxed, but open as if to gesture during a conversation.
