Who Were They?

Lost and forgotten photos from the past

This sweet baby looks out at the camera, a picture of cherubic beauty. She is identified on the back with a post it note as Mary Hunt. The fact that someone within the past 20 or 30 years knew who this baby was, and yet the photo still wound up for sale makes me a bit sad. The child wasn’t as important to a later generation of people, or they had no connection to whomever identified Mary Hunt.

The photograph itself has an interesting technique. Most of the plate around little Mary is blacked out somehow. It causes her image to really stand out on the plate. My guess is there was a normal studio chair, or possibly even a hidden mother holding her, and the family or photographer wanted to feature just Mary.
