Who Were They?

Lost and forgotten photos from the past

This hair style says “swoop” to me. Perhaps this fellow is sitting for his college graduation, maybe as a doctor or a lawyer? He is nattily dressed, with trim on his jacket lapels and vest, crisp collar points and a neatly tied cravat.

The photographer was Leon & Co in Nashville, IL. Funny, you never really hear about this Nashville, always the “other” one.

“Swoop” looks like he is wearing a toupee’ to me. *laffs*

Nashville, Illinois is about 185 miles south of Peoria (where other photos in this album were taken) and is probably a distant suburb of Saint Louis, MO now.

There is a Nashville in Arkansas, California, Gerogia, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, Texas, Wisconsin and North Carolina too… “Mr. Nash” must of been pretty famous.

Just as an aside… Nashville Tennesee is named after Brigadier General (American Revolutionary War) Francis Nash (1742 – October 7, 1777).

He was mortally wounded during the Battle of Germantown on October 4, 1777 and died on October 7. He was buried in the Towamencin Mennonite Meetinghouse Cemetery in Towamencin Township, Pennsylvania. His gravestone is located about 2 miles from where I work and I pass by it frequently.

Don’t laugh… that swoop is almost the the “princeton” guys wore in the late 1960s. There was a little swoop going on then too. OK, go ahead and laugh.
