Who Were They?

Lost and forgotten photos from the past

Betty Koon

I found this sweet little gal at a curio shop called Keepers here where I live. This is Betty Koon. Betty Koon is a surprisingly popular name, with about  11 born between 1901-1930, all across the US! I am hesitantly dating this photo as 1900-1910, but I could be off. There is no photographer information on the photo. I just love the expression on little Betty’s face, as though someone made her laugh. She is wearing a necklace as well as a baby ring.

She is as cute as a bug in a rug. Her shoes are just too cute!

It is such an unusual expression. You get the feeling that if you were to see the same face 40 years on you would still recognise it.

Throw in the fact that Betty might be a nickname for Elizabeth and you will probably find another 5-6 matches. Most of them appear to come from South Carolina (I just did a quicky peek).

She and all her dress and jewelry are totally adorable. My observation is her left hand, arm and shoulder. She evidently had a brachial plexus injury at birth, which is also called Erb’s Palsy. The damage to this nerve causes the arm to be useless or nearly so. It makes the shoulder not work properly…..look it up. Quite interesting. 🤔
