Who Were They?

Lost and forgotten photos from the past

Yesterday’s CdV of one of four possible women was directly next to today’s photo of either Andrew Hedlund or Carl Johan Sjoman. I spoke to a friend of mine who’s last name also has that Sj- in the beginning. The Sj in Norwegian is pronounced as a “Sh” sound. So the couple might be from Norway before making their way to the J. W. Upham gallery in Jamestown NY.

Andrew (Anders) Hedlund and Martha Erickson were my great-great grandparents and the picture posted is not Andrew Hedlund. After Martha died, Andrew married Anna Kajsa (I’m uncertain if Kajsa was a middle name or her last name) and Anna bore 5 more children, 2 of whom died in infancy and the three remaining sons passed in their twenties. (My records show six children for the union between Andrew and Martha).

How cool to trip onto your site!

    This is Carl Johan Sjoman
The photo is not him, though there are some similar characteristics of the Sjoman family that your photo does have. Carl Johan Sjoman was an Eriksson before coming to America from Tide Parish Sweden, so technically he was an Eriksson and changed his name to Sjoman after immigrating as many people of Swedish Decent did back then. Carl Johan Eriksson Sjoman is my 2nd great grandfather who built the farmhouse in Hawley, Eglon township, Becker County, MN that the next two generations of my family lived in including my mother for a short time. This is not him, though I wouldn’t doubt that it is closely related with the shape of that face and the facial features.
