Who Were They?

Lost and forgotten photos from the past

This lovely dark eyed girl is identified in the photo album as Edwina Fulton, niece of Emma Mearns. I looked through the entire book and there is not a photo of Emma Mearns and if there ever was one, it has long since gone with another family member. There are numerous open spaces in the album. However, there is a photo of an Emma Chandler. Iggy can you do anything with this? We shall see.

The photographer was A. K. P. Trask at 1210 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA. I’d guess that Ms. Fulton is between 14-17 years of age in this photo.

Edwina Fulton (b. Dec 1876) married Austin S. Winslow in 1898. (Philadelphia Orphan’s Court Record)

    I found this too:

Pennsylvania, Philadelphia City Death Certificates, 1803-1915 for Edwin Fulton Winslow
    Death Date: 24 Apr 1902
    Death Place: Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
    Gender: Male
    Race: White
    Death Age: 6 months
    Estimated Birth Year: 1902
    Birthplace: Pennsylvania
    Father’s Name: Austin S. Winslow
    Mother’s Name: Edwina Winslow
    Street Address: 6431 Vine St
Place of Residence: Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pa
    Cemetery: Woodlands
    Burial Place: Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pa
    Burial Date: 26 Apr 1902

I could find nothing further – she “disappears” after 1902.

If Emma Mearns is her Aunt… I will assume she was about 10-20 years older than Edwina and born about 1850-ish. Will investigate when I can.

    :)

Emma Mearns was “nee Fulton”. I found this:

CAROLINE MEARNS, daughter of Samuel J. and Emma (Fulton) Mearns

United States Census, 1870 for Emma Mearns
Estimated Birth Year: 1842 (this date fits pretty well).
    Gender: Female
    Age in 1870: 28y
    Birthplace: Pennsylvania
Home in 1870: Cecil, Maryland, United States
    Household Gender Age
    Samuel J Mearns M 35y
    Emma Mearns F 28y
    Caroline Mearns F 3y
    Margaret J Mearns F 43y

United States Census, 1910 for Emma Mearns
    Birthplace: Pennsylvania
Relationship to Head of Household: Self
    Residence: Calvert, Cecil, Maryland
    Marital Status: Widowed
    Race : White
    Gender: Female
    Father’s Birthplace: Maryland
    Mother’s Birthplace: Pennsylvania
    Household Gender Age
    Emma Mearns F 67y (1843)
    Daugher
    Margaret A Fassitt F 38y
    Son-in-law
    Alfred Fassitt M 37y

So Emma Chandler is someone else… unless Emma Mearns remarried after the age of 67.

United States Census, 1850 for Emma Fulton
Residence: Philadelphia, South ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
    Age: 8 years
    Calculated Birth Year: 1842
    Birthplace: Pennsylvania, United States
    Household Gender Age
    William Fulton M 40
    Caroline Fulton F 40
    –Children–
    William T Fulton (m. Mary A Murphy) M 11
    Anabella Fulton F 10
    Emma Fulton F 8 <———————-
    Mary E Fulton F 6
    Edwin F Fulton M 4
    Martha T Fulton F 3

If i had to guess – I would assume Edwina was Edwin's daughter. She doesn't appear to be William T.'s. Edwin was unmarried in 1870 and doesn't appear in the 1880 census.

Edwina Fulton Winslow is listed in the 1920 US Census as “Edwin” and born in 1878. No wonder I didn’t see her. She and Austin are living alone at that time.

In the 1900 census, she is listed with spouse Auster Winslow with child Rosemon Winslow (September 1899). Did Rosemon live and marry?

With the “fuzzy” dates – I can’t find any record for 1910.
